One that has existed for as long as audiobooks have been around. It is a valid question too. Does it? Obviously audiobook listeners are biased to say yes. And those stodgy book lovers are going to be inclined to say the opposite. So which is it?

A book lover will tell you that it doesn’t count because you are not actually holding a physical object and reading it line by line. An audiobook listener will tell you that it counts because they are the same words your brain is processing, just through your ears. Well, dear reader, as someone who both reads and listeners to audiobooks, I have an opinion on the mater. I’ll cut to the chase. Listening to audiobooks is not the same as reading. Let me explain why.

First and foremost – listening to an audiobook is, by definition, not reading. Listening and reading are two different set of skills. One uses the ears, the other, the eyes. Neither are particularly superior to the other – both are important skills to have. But this is where the heart of the argument comes up. People want to feel superior to each other – so it’s really a question about who is the better person.

Books have certainly existed longer than audiobooks and require a set of very intentional skills to cultivate good reading abilities; however, by that same logic, oral storytelling has existed much longer than the printed page. An audiobook is much closer to oral storytelling than reading is.

I think we have to take a different approach to this whole topic. We should stop viewing it as which one is better, but rather, recognize they are different mediums. They’re the same stories and same set of sentences. A story is a story.

Let’s delve into some of the pros and cons of both mediums.

The Pros and Cons to ReadinG A Book:

Let’s start the conversation with a breakdown of reading. Reading is more engaging than listening. It requires focus and discipline. You have to actively interpret the words before you and form the meaning in your mind. Your eyes have to scan the page back and forth. This is good for the mind as it is exercising concentration.

A book is easier to navigate than an audiobook. If you have to back track, this is much more convenient. All you have to do is go back a few sentences, paragraph, or pages. Your mind usually is pretty good at back tracking what you need to. With an audiobook, it’s much more of a guess about where you need to go back to. The book is in your control.

Experiencing a story from a book is more subjective. You are conjuring up voices and tones in your own head. You are forming everything about the world and characters in your own mind (aside from what the words guide you on.)

Some of the cons might include the following:

A book requires you to have sit down – you can’t do anything else except read. For a lot of people this is a pro, but if we’re talking about reading vs audiobooks, then I consider this a con…

Because reading requires our full attention, there is less time in a day to do it. There are other things in your life calling for your attention and fighting to be prioritized. Reading has to be scheduled within your day and is more difficult to fit in. Something has to be sacrificed in order for you to read.

Reading requires you to have a physical object. Once again, this could be a pro or con… for the sake of this argument, we’ll say it’s a con. Having to hold something physical can be highly inconvenient. It means you are limited in what else you can do.

The Pros and Cons to Listing to AN AudiobooK:

The big fat obvious pro of listening to audiobooks rather than reading is how much more convenient it is. You don’t have to sit still, and you don’t have to focus – you can multitask and still appreciate the same story. You don’t need a physical book and you don’t need to interpret words… it’s just over-all easier.

An audiobook can feel more intimate than reading, as you get to listen to a narrator. You become very familiar with the narrator and their way of telling the story. There’s a bond you form to them. And they often aid in the story in being more memorable. When recalling parts of the story, you can conjure up the narrator and the way they read through it.

Another aspect of listening to audiobooks that is great includes the ability to improve word pronunciation. When reading (as we often do it in our heads) we make up the pronunciations of a lot of words and sometimes don’t even realize it. Hearing someone read words out clearly and precisely help us grasp words better and increase our vocabulary.

A con of audiobooks is that they are less controllable than a physical book. You can’t go back over the text and review it if we missed something. You have to carefully scrub until you find the exact spot you were at which is tiresome.

Because audiobooks have narrators, they are less subjective to the reader. Instead of creating one’s own characters in the head, the narrator is creating a large portion of them for you by their reading and the voices they use.

Audiobooks are also a passive way of enjoying a story compared to reading. Reading requires focus and discipline and attentiveness. These are good traits to build. Listening while you do chores doesn’t require building up these traits, so it’s less engaging to your mind and senses. In fact, you probably aren’t paying as close attention to the story as you think you are.

The Benefits to both Reading And Listening:

Some of the pros and cons have been laid out for both options. It’s your choice to decide what you value most. I personally spend quite a bit of time listening to audiobooks due to not having a lot of leisure time, but I do try to keep up the practice of reading (and I do enjoy reading). It’s just more difficult to fit into my day.

Another point to consider as to whether you to listen to or read a book might include why you are picking it up to begin with. Is it more of a leisure read, or is it more of an intensive read? Leisure stories may be better for audiobooks due to not needing to pay as close of attention, but if you are studying or trying to tackle a very intensive book, reading may be the better option for the sake of focus.

Whether listening or reading, both options help you improve your memory and vocabulary. New words and phrases come our way. The same part of the brain that processes words is lit up whether reading or listening. Having to track the story and characters requires some level of engagement, even if listening, and that helps one practice recalling details.

And, at the end of the day, whether reading or listening to a book, you are still getting the chance to enjoy a story. Being able to enjoy a story helps us all to better empathize, see other perspectives, and think. Improving these skills is not exclusive to any particular way we consume a story.

Conclusion:

When it comes down to whether reading physical books or listening to audiobooks is better, it’s personal preference and a matter of your priorities. Reading is a skill you have to build and it will benefit you in other areas of your life, but listening gives you much more leeway to enjoy the same story while taking care of other tasks.

When asking the question about whether audiobooks count as reading, I will say they do not. But I won’t say that doesn’t mean you didn’t get to enjoy a book. It’s not a competitions about whether the book reader is a better person. They might have some better skills associated with reading, but their priorities are different than the audiobook listener,

It’s important to recognize the strength and weaknesses to both, and maybe even appreciate them both. There’s no-one saying you can’t enjoy both reading and listening to books. In fact, I think it may be good to learn how to enjoy both mediums because they teach you different skills. Regardless, you are getting the same story. It’s just your choice about which option would best suite your enjoyment of it.

Check Out Some Other Posts!

How Social Media Has Ruined Intentional Storytelling

The Benefits to Tracking Your Media Consumption

“Even most of those who really never have time to read a book usually have more than enough time to listen to one.”

[5

0":"post-328","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-literature","8":"entry

Does Listening to Audiobooks Count as Reading?
